Our first piece of Christmas inspiration comes from Otago Design, the ‘African Atelier’, producing timeless objects for people who define their own style…
“We are a multidisciplinary design studio, which offers an interior design service and a range of accessories specializing in sustainable & ecological design. Our aim is to offer cutting edge design underpinned by a focus on sustainability and support for our suppliers.
Otago works with highly skilled artisans from marginalized communities all over Africa, enabling their work to be seen by a much wider audience, whilst ensuring they receive proper payment for their craftmanship and skill.
The Otago Design debut collection consists of tableware, lighting, glassware, linens and decorative accessories. Using skills of horn & bone carving, Maasai beading, brass and metal casting and weaving from artisans in Kenya, Swaziland and the DRC.
The collection is designed for those who recognise quality and seek something special and rare; someone who is captivated by the high caliber of design and inspired by the soul behind the work.
In our first year of business we have carried out numerous photo shoots, attended trade shows and are now embarking on our first pop up shop. The support of the Van Girl fleet and their strong team to cart around our wares has been essential.
Our interior design service is an opportunity for all those who are moving home to customize their new living environments. We encourage our clients to use ethically sourced materials and embrace furniture pieces which have been handmade, bringing a unique story into the home.
